Oscar Book

An Oscar for Independent Booksellers

The Oscar electronic Point-of-Sale System, designed specifically for the independent retailer, has swept the board in independent music retail and now Oscar Book has been launched for the independent bookseller.

The Oscar system is manufactured by Northampton-based Ranger Computers and is widely used in the UK and in the Republic of Ireland. All users are independent retailers, including single, owner-operated stores and small chains.

Girls with books

Ranger Computers are committed to the independent retail sector and believe that electronic Point-of-Sale, E-Commerce and quality, state-of-the-art systems should be available, and affordable, to all retailers, not just the big stores and major chains.

Speed is of the essence in independent retailing so all Oscar systems offer incredible performance by using the very latest technology, this also means that they are not weighed down by top-heavy systems and administration costs.

A single till Oscar can provide all that a small shop needs and additional tills can easily be added if more resources are needed, the system can grow with the retailer. Back office Oscar’, known as ‘Boscar’, provides identical functionality but without the till drawer. ‘Oscar Head Office’, another recent addition to the Oscar range, works with the in-store Oscars to cater specifically for the small chain.

Oscar Book is built around the major book-industry catalogue, supplied by Neilsen BookData, which provides details of most ‘in print’ and forthcoming titles. This means that books brought into stock are already known to the system by name and this information can then appear on itemised receipts and detailed reports. Booksellers who also stock music can opt to add the daily-updated music industry catalogue to their system to give them the best of both worlds. The Neilsen data is supplied on CD-ROM and copied to the Oscar's hard drive for ultimate performance.

The new BookData CD-ROM range provides access to a unique database of up-to-date title records, ensuring that you have all the information you need at your fingertips. The CD-ROMs include descriptions, tables of contents (where applicable), subject classifications, readership levels, publisher and distributor details and much more, plus fast, easy and flexible search facilities.
